However, I do want to discuss the video at length for a number of reasons, so this review will be divided into two parts: a song review and a video review. This is, first and foremost, a song review. Their music sounds overproduced, I’m not sure if anyone actually plays any instruments on their albums, and Levine sounds like a malfunctioning robot that just got its nads chopped off. (In case you couldn’t tell, I’m not fond of Maroon 5 at all, especially the modern incarnation. The lead single, Maps, did reasonably well, and they’re trying to top that success with their second single release, Animals. It promptly became huge, and it promptly made Adam Levine relevant again.Īdam decided that he enjoyed being relevant, so the group’s next album, Overexposed, featured guest producers and hired gun songwriters galore – the lead single even had a guest rapper, the ultimate mark of “We don’t care if this sounds any good, just buy it on iTunes, please, we’re going for a hit single here!” Unsurprisingly, the album and all its singles were big successes (commercially, anyway), and Maroon 5 were officially A Thing again, despite the fact that the only thing that really links the likes of She Will Be Loved and, say, Payphone together is Levine’s voice, which we’ll just diplomatically describe as “distinctive.” That brings us to 2014, as Maroon 5’s fifth album, aptly titled V, currently inhabits the shelves. The result was Moves Like Jagger, completely with strategically placed guest verse from strategically placed fellow Voice judge Christina Aguilera. He became the judge on a network reality singing show, he posed naked for Cosmo, and he (and his alleged band) hired Benny Blanco and Shellback to write him a hit song after apparently discovering that he couldn’t pull it off himself anymore. So Levine did what any egotistical famous person who is clearly cognizant of his public perception would do when faced with the potential of his career going down the toilet – he sold out. (Really.) It appeared that Maroon 5’s star power might be waning. Levine chalked up the underwhelming reception to the fact that it was recorded in Switzerland. Their third album, Hands All Over, arrived in 2010 to lackluster sales figures and mixed reviews, and its biggest single – Misery – peaked at number 14 in the Hot 100.
The followup, It Won’t Be Soon Before Long, came in 2007, a bit poppier and funkier than its predecessor lacking a signature song, it was not nearly as successful (though it does include Won’t Go Home Without You, which is the closest thing Maroon 5 have ever come to releasing something I actually like). It really took two years – and a spot on tour with John Mayer – for the momentum to build up, but once it did, Adam Levine and His Backing Band shot to worldwide fame. They got dropped by their record label, nearly broke up, regrouped, got a new record deal, and Songs About Jane appeared in 2002, bringing with it the song that made them famous, She Will Be Loved, along with This Love, another staple of the band’s. Their first album, released under a different name, quite frankly sounds like Green Day on Prozac ( seriously, listen to this.) It completely flopped upon its release in 1997, which is a shame, since it’s far more listenable than anything they’ve put out since.

Now, Maroon 5 are a glossy pop band with an annoying frontman who have professional songwriters pen them soulless hits that may or may not feature any of the actual band members performing on them. Once upon a time, Maroon 5 were a semi-interesting adult alternative band with an annoying frontman that wrote and performed their own songs. It’s a real doozy today, so sit back, relax, and do your best to struggle though Animals by Maroon 5!
